I've been going to this chain called Chipotle, which has a location in West Wood. You would think that a chain is last place to go for a good burrito, but this place has amazing quality and consistency. Also, they are very fast and give you exactly what you want--even building the burrito in front of you.

I like to get it without rice and lots of veggies for example... they don't seem to mind that (other places are trying to give you 60% rice).

Prices are very reasonable.

Yuca's in Los Feliz FTW. The burrito shack was also highlighted on an episode of ''Oprah''. If she loves it, it must be fantastic.

The best borritos are not at chains, you have to go to the authentic places. La Cabana on Lincoln and Rose in Venice is amazing.

I can't pick one specific place, but in my experience here, the more hole-in-the-wall a place looks like, the better the burrito!

As far as chains go, I agree that Chipotle is great... And their burritos are HUGE. I would personally never recommend Baja Fresh as the best burrito in LA, but that's just my opinion!

I agree with this answer, and it brings up an interesting point about burritology. There are two types of burritos we are discussing:
a). Cheap/quick eats. Chains are good for this.
b). The gourmet burrito. This is when you have allotted yourself special time for a burrito, and you're looking for something a notch above chains.
In this second category, I have to nominate El Compadre in Hollywood:

The beef and pork burritos at El Conquistador in Silverlake are always very good. It's a sit-down restaurant, not a fast food place or taco truck. To be fair, I've usually had at least one of their giant margaritas before eating the burrito, which somehow makes it taste better.

In my experience, holes in the wall are the BEST places to get burritos. IMO, effort should go into the delicious burrito, not dressing up the place.

What's with all the chain restaurants? (Chipotle is owned by McDonalds) We're talking about Los Angeles people! There are authentic taquerias on almost every block.

Los Tacos has the best burritos ever. I promise.

El Gran Burrito is my second favorite.

To clarify a common misconception, McDonald's no longer owns a majority stake in Chipotle. They divested in October of 2006.

I agree, though, that Chipotle is not even among the best of chain burritos, and there are much tastier and authentic burritos in L.A. to choose from.

Two places...Joselito's in Montrose (a bit of a drive but great family atmosphere and the place has been around FOREVER), and Mexico City in Los Feliz (on Hillhurst). Plays like a dark coffee shop when you walk in, but the food is amazing. If you don't get the burrito, get the chicken mole. Wow.

Mexico City:
2121 Hillhurst Ave Los Angeles, CA 90027-2003

Joselito's:
2345 Honolulu Ave, Montrose, CA 91020

Enjoy!

Some of the best burritos in the city, according to Yelp.com reviews:

Taquerias El Atacor #11
Cypress Park
2622 N Figueroa St
Los Angeles, CA 90065
Review: "Great hole in the wall Mex joint. All I have ever gotten here is the chicken burrito and the potato tacos and both are awesome. You can tell the beans are full of lard and thats just fine by me." - Nate P.

El Tepeyac
Alhambra
800 S Palm Ave Ste 8
Alhambra, CA 91804
Review: "The best burritos in the world." - Joseph C.

El Huarachito
Lincoln Heights
3010 N Broadway
Los Angeles, CA 90031
Review: "
I know the Mexican breakfasts are popular, but I almost always stick with my favorite dish: a veggie burrito (sometimes with a side of guacamole, sometimes just with their house salsa), no queso. The mix of fried cactus, potato, onions, rice and beans in a fresh flour tortilla is perfectly satisfying, as is the cucumber agua fresca and the charming personalities of Esther and her lead waitress. Richard swears by the carne asada burrito with a Mexican coke in the bottle." - Kim C.

According to CitySearch Best of Los Angeles 2007, the audience favorite burrito is at
Joselito's Mexican Food
7308 Foothill Blvd , Tujunga , CA , 91042
"Tujunga family-owned Mexican eatery open since 1977; popular for their homemade sweet corn tamales, crab enchiladas and Sunday champagne brunch."

and their editorial favorite is at
La Barca
2414 S Vermont Ave , Los Angeles , CA , 90007-1660
"South of the Border chintz meets "Animal House" at this downtown legend. "

According to MyFox Los Angeles 2008, the best burrito is at
Pepe's Finest Mexican Food
821 N Placentia Ave Fullerton CA 92831
Review: "Pepe's has the best breakfast burrito around- we travel 10 miles just to enjoy it. The rest of the menu is great too, but it is hard to top the behemoth breakfast burrito" - ColetteRN

According to AOL City's Best, the best burrito is at
Tito's Tacos
11222 Washington Pl
Culver City, CA 90230
Review: "Titos is my favorite, so much so that I want it as my last meal before I die."

Try El Taurino. Rought neighborhood but plenty of security. Open late Fridays and Saturdays for after the clubs. Good mighty food for cheap not like the white washed taco places. For what you spend at Baja Fresh you can eat twice here.

Why they call it Tito's Tacos I'll never know as the Tacos suck but the Burrito - now we're talking. Huge chunks of steak - rich red meaty sauce, cheese and beans if required all for around 4 bucks. Corner of Washington place and Sepulveda.

Fast answer (then see below):
Tacos Por Favor
Neighborhood: Santa Monica
1406 Olympic Blvd
Santa Monica, CA 90404
(310) 392-5768
http://www.yelp.com/biz/tacos-por-favor-santa-monica

http://img.skitch.com/20090112-t4rmcq5w6gh4cc71ct8ww9m9cf.jpg

IMO, there are three types of Mexican food:
1) Hole-in-the-wall authentic (includes taco trucks) - i.e. order your food from counter
2) 'Fancy' authentic - i.e. sit down, get service
3) Commercial - e.g. Chipotle, Baja Fresh, Taco Bell, etc

That said, it is my experience that the best burritos in Los Angeles come from hole-in-the-wall authentic, then 'fancy' authentic, and then finally commercial. As someone who grew up and spent his entire life in San Diego and Los Angeles I can tell you that anyone who suggests otherwise is not to be trusted as an authority on burritos.

As for the best burrito in LA, if you are in the Westside, I would heartily recommend Tacos Por Favor. It's the best hole-in-the-wall burrito I've found in the Westside. Big burritos, a wide variety of delicious meats, few fillers, and super-friendly staff. You won't be disappointed!

Check out this recommendation from yelp [1]:
"Your authentic marinated Carne Asada is a rose amongst the weeds that are all other burritos in L.A. You will add black beans, yes i say black beans, cheese, and sour cream to my burrito, and you will give it to me. A gift I pay a mere 8 or so dollars for. I would pay 50 dollars...not as often but I would pay it. I would drink the red sauce out of the trough I retrieve it from."

In my opinion the best Burrito in LA is at El Tepeyac. This is an East LA institution. Generations of East LA residents have been coming to this Mecca of savory goodness. The perfect comfort food! Come with an appetite because these are the biggest burritos in LA, but at the same time truly delicious. Pure satisfaction.
