Take a look at Mahalo's page on How to Lose Weight. Everyone's looking for the quickest fix, but when it comes down to it the only safe way to lose weight is the old fashioned way: eat healthy and exercise.

Cutting down on calories, eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking a lot of water, and regular exercise are the safest way to get pounds off and keep them off. Fad diets can be dangerous and have no guarantee for the long term.

The hardest part is changing your habits, but once you are in a routine you'll be good to go!

I concur that How to Lose Weight offers some valuable tips. Here are a few ones that can speed your weight loss:
Muscle cells burn calories even at rest. If you enter into a weight-training program, you can increase your body's metabolism and calorie-burning abilities.
Eat breakfast! Many people think that they can help themselves by skipping this meal. Not true -- it revs up your body's metabolism in the morning.

Hope this helps!

For me, portion control is a huge problem. It's very hard for me to keep my calories down without feeling hungry.

A good friend swears by Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss. Basically, it shows, side-by-side in images, how similar types of foods stack up in calories.

For example, a handful of nuts has the same number of calories as 10 cups of popcorn. And a pop-tart has more calories than a short stack of pancakes.

It's not a diet book per se, but it is an interesting adjunct to making good food choices. I just got my copy and am starting to use it in now that the feasting season is upon us.

If you really want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to do it slowly. I know--it's hard to hear, but you simply have to teach yourself to eat less and you have to get your system trained to need less. That takes time. I lost 40 pounds by simply exercising a little and eating sensibly. No special diets, no extravagant exercise regime. It took me a year. But, that was three years ago, and I'm down a few pounds more without any extra work. I feel great! unless I overeat, when I feel awful.

So my recommendation, if you want to live a healthy life, is to stop looking for a quick weight loss diet and just take your time!
