The split happened "a few weeks ago," according to a source close to the couple, but it's unclear what precipitated it. "It was a mutual thing," adds the source.

Regarding why they separated... I would think it is related to how young they are. At that age, you don't have a very deep understanding of relationships or life. It's easy to have unrealistic expectations or not know what "happiness" is.
It's normal for teenagers to change rapidly themselves in terms of the type of person they want to be. Personalities and attitudes change. The relationship probably wasn't easy anymore and they likely didn't want to invest the time to try to work things out. It can be easier to break up. The 18-year-old daughter of the Alaskan Governor told the Associated Press she was "devastated" by the split.
