Would either a Radeon 4850 or Nivida 9800GTX be a worthy upgrade from my Nvidia 8800GTS 320 mb graphics card?

Ive looked at some benchmarks from Toms Hardware, and there does seem to be a noticeable frame-rate jump. That said, there seems to be a 'vibe' from forums that both these cards are not enough of a jump over the 8800 GTS lineup to qualify as an upgrade. Bit confused, been out of the graphics card market for a while...

(I know SLI is an option, just more interested in a single card solution at the moment)

My present system
Core2Duo 2.66
2 gigs of Ram
500 watt power supply.
WinXP.

Mostly no with your system. Although I think the biggest difference is the version of Direct X supported and therefore the games which can be played.
