I need my wisdom teeth extracted. Does Medical Insurance cover this procedure?

I do not have dental insurance. I do have medical insurance, but my current dentist / oral surgeon says in not cover. For all 4 teeth is about $3,000 USD.

Does any one know if this can be cover with your medical plan?

Thanks.

This is definitely one of those 'it depends' questions. Medical insurance can cover it. However, they will usually only cover it if the teeth are partially or completely impacted. My daughter had hers removed at age 14. She needed general anesthesia. The entire procedure was covered by my medical insurance because all four teeth were impacted. The procedure was covered by an oral surgeon and it needed to get authorized in advance. If her teeth had not been impacted, it would not have been covered by my health insurance.

I would contact your insurance company and see if they have any participating oral surgeons. Get a consult with that oral surgeon. Their office will likely be able to tell you if the particular procedure that you need will be covered.

I have Aetna - but my medical and dental are separate, even though they are both covered by Aetna. I've never heard of medical insurance covering dental work. Sorry.

You should call your health care provider to confirm.

Medical may cover it, but tooth extraction is usually not covered by dental insurance as a dentist does not perform the operation. You'll always want to call your medical insurance provider to find out. Especially before having a consultation because the consultation may not even be covered. Also, do not rely on the office staff of the surgeon to know your insurance.

Also, if you change your medical insurance, they will most likely not cover a preexisting condition such as tooth extraction.

I recommend negotiating with the surgeon on the price if you can bring cash to the table. They may also have in-house financing.
