-- You can sell you gift cards for cash! (for a less than face value) but you can also swap cards too!

Pretty cool idea.

• Thanks for providing, not one or two, but several places to complete this type of transaction!

Tip for getting cash for gift cards
Instead of giving presents to others in honor of special occasions many people are choosing to give gift cards. For those typically on the receiving end of gifts that they don't need or don't want gift cards can be great. But what if you receive a gift card to a store you don't find appealing or you would simply prefer the value of the gift card in cash? Thanks to the Internet there is a solution.

The following web sites allow users to trade unwanted gift cards for other gift cards or cash:

Cardavenue.com
Swapagift.com
Craigslist.org
EBay.com
Plasticjungle.com
Cardavenue.com
Swapagift.com
thegiftcardtrader.com
giftcardcove.com
gctradein.flipswap.com
swapagift.com

There's always Ebay, too. Check and see which site offers you the highest exchange rate first, and beware the sites that take a large fee from the transaction.

I would also recommend both Ebay and Craigslist. I have personally used Ebay to sell gift cards and Craigslist to purchase some. In at least one case of selling a gift card on Ebay, the bidder paid more than the value on the card which seemed to defy reason. In general, gift cards from many stores bring very high values on Ebay, typically at least 90% of face value.

There are some downsides to these sites. To start with, neither is an automated system to pull out cash value which it seems you would like. Ebay charges commissions so you get less. Also, there are inconveniences involved. For Ebay, you would need to pack it in an envelope and mail it and for Craigslist, you would need to arrange to meet someone in person.

Neither of these suggestions are truly unique ideas but I figured I'd point out some of the cons of each.

But any place I'd want to exchange gift cards I'd have to mail the cards.

That's quite true - that was a stupid comment on my part :-)

Some people actually list unwanted gift cards on Ebay. They generally sell for a few dollars less than the amount of the gift card.

An interesting site is http://www.plasticjungle.com where you can also buy other people's, sell your own or even trade gift cards.
Most of them are discounted too.

If you happen to live in the state of Washington, you're in luck. By Washington law a vendor cannot force you to keep funds in an account that they maintain. If you want to withdraw the funds you have to right to do so. If you notify the vendor that you want to withdraw the funds and they do not comply you are entitled to penalties. So you could actually make money out of the deal if you find a Washington company that is unaware of this law and does not give you back your gift card dollars.

I successfully withdrew money from a Gameworks card under this law (even though their corporate policy is "no refunds").

Thanks, great information, didn't know about that! On the downside, I'm in Toronto, so that doesn't really apply.

Hopefully people will find that helpful
