#1: Mistaking "being in love" for love. How many times have I heard "But I LOOOOVE him!" #2: "He'll change." This mistaken belief is the worst and a primary reason domestic violence victims return to the abuser.
#3: Thinking that this is the way relationships are supposed to be. (Another mistaken belief.) Probably learned from parents or caretakers.
#4: Similar disorders. "People who are like each other, like each other." Although two people with paranoia won't hang together, two Narcissistic personalities definitely would. So, the bad relationship is a part of an individual issue.
#5: Manipulation. Playing on #1 and #2, people see benefiting through using the other, so they'll manipulate the other person to stay in the relationship.

I'm basing my answer off of the reasons my mother is staying with my father; 1. Financial dependence
2. They think the person is the best they will ever get
3. They have children and they feel splitting up will ruin the child(en)'s self image or family image
4. They are scared the person they are with will hurt them if they leave or if they want to leave
5. The person thinks that the person they are with will change but in reality they already changed into a horrible human being.
