The form doesent matter. To answer your question you must know how cheese is made. Since, nobody uses a square cauldron to put the milk in...obviously the cheese is round. I never seen a square cauldron. The normal shape is round.
Hope this helps!

Does the actual form of a cheese really matter, i.e. why are there no square camembert cheeses etc.?

Apparently shape has an impact on quality, particularly with cheese that is not dry salted or is surface ripened. These types of cheeses require time and high pressure to consolidate and as a consequence, a strong mold to enable it. Round molds are typically the strongest, so you'll find cheeses of that type (cheddar, camembert, etc) to always be round.
