Who was the superior bicycle racer, Lance Armstrong, or Eddy Merckx?

Lance won more Tours, but one could argue that Eddy's versatility in winning the one-day classics, breaking track records, and winning several the other grand Tours make him THE all-time great.

With over 40 race and stage wins Eddy Merckx is the better cyclist. Sure, it's great Armstrong pwned The Tour but he would have been more respected around the world if he had diversified just a tad.

As a note - as someone who doesn't follow this stuff much at all-

I know who Lance Armstrong is.

I wouldn't have been able to tell you who Eddy Merckx was until i read this question.

Take it as you may.
