For me education is the foundation of my political beliefs. I firmly believe that absolutely everything can be improved with education. In this economic recession it is frustrating that my country has cut educational spending. If anything money should be pumped into it (especially as Ireland would like to think of itself as a "smart economy"). Better educated people have better job prospects and it also lowers crime. Education helps to foster understanding, helping to kick out racism, sectarianism etc.

Perhaps I should also clarify myself here. I don't believe education is purely academic. I think practical subjects in schools offer students and young people the chance to explore their skills and talents (and when they find something they like it lessens their chances of getting involved in petty crimes through boredom and also gives them a great sense of self-esteem). Self esteem gained through education helps people feel good about themselves and gives them something to do, whether its a grant-assisted night courses or just going to a book reading in a library. I was lucky enough to take part in a cross-border, EU funded initiative between 4 schools where we learned about entrepreneurship. As well as giving us invaluable life skills, we learned from each other and understood the Troubles and how it affects different people on a day-to-day basis.

Education also improves health because people have better jobs to spend on good food and medicine AND they know what is good for them.

Knowledge is power people. That's why cutbacks really really drive me up the wall. As someone mentioned, I fear gifted children are not challeneged enough (CTY tries to address this but I believe it too has lost its grant) and other children still are not properly stimulated and "hate school". Can you blame them when it's not offering something they feel they can excel in? Ugh I could rant forever but EDUCATION FTW! (closely followed by healthcare :D )

I am passionate about healthcare reform, because a healtcare system has become expensive and continues to grow. We need universal healthcare for all American Citizens.

Health care, education, freedom of speech, anti-trust, shifting from military involvement to social programs, and the development of alternative energy methods.

I'm passionate about the No Child Left Behind program. I feel it is holding back gifted children. I would like to see smart kids getting more support from the government. Programs like FIRST Robotics do a great job of this, but I really wish the government would do more to push smart kids.

I really care about a woman's right to have an abortion. Its not the only issue that I vote on, but it plays a big part.

Immigration. If you don’t have enough jobs for your citizens how can you let in more people?
Wages. The minimum wage was supposed to be 50% of average national wages and the problem has been congress has to vote to increase it, when you work in a factory you give up going to school or starting a business and that was used as the rational for decent wages in this country and now we have gotten away from that and wages have declined based on the CPI index.
Invading countries that did nothing to us or creating badwill when we could create good will.
Lowering standards of living, business lobbies claim they are over taxed or lawsuits are out of control and what has happened is that they pay less and less taxes and there have been more restrictions on lawsuits.
People that game the system because of past injustices done to blacks in this country. There is a whole history of bad deeds done to the black population of this country. Slavery, Jim Crow… how do people that move here voluntarily piggy back their issues to this cause? What happened to other groups should not be associated with what happened to blacks, with the exception of Native Americans and I don’t mean someone from Michoacán.

On immigration in my country at least, we employed them and let them do "lesser" jobs when things were good. Now that they're bad we want to kick them out. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Any immigrant I have ever worked with (bar maybe one or two) has been twice as hard-working as any citizen of my country. I think it's perfectly fair for them to compete for jobs, so long as they enter the country legally and are paid minimum wage. It's fair game.

I would say health care and the war on Iraq and also Terrorism.
The issues that are about wars and violence is what seems to
catch a lot of my attention.

  1. Freedom of religion. Fearing God and keeping His commandments is the whole duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Any laws preventing obeying God (as directly laid out in the Bible) must be disobeyed (Acts 5:29).
  2. Protection of unborn life. The whole point of government is protecting people and their property from those who would harm them. In our time of science and technology, we know now more than ever that unborn children are alive, can think, and can feel. It is time for government to stop bowing to political pressure and protect the weakest and most vulnerable in our society.
  3. Limited government. There are those who wish to elevate government to near God-like proportions, giving government power over our eating choices (e.g. transfat ban), driving choices (mandatory seatbelt use), lifestyle choices (e.g. banning smoking in your own home), etc. Some people want government to be our charities, our religions, and to protect us from ourselves. Sadly, while we all want life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all, large governments merely crave power. Letting the government enact laws to prevent all bad and unhappy events leads to fascism. Fascist dictators come into power by promising things that governments should not have the rights to do. Once they have the power, they will weild it how they wish. We need government to protect life and property and then stay out of our lives.

They won't let me wear a seat belt and fly through my windscreen? Or if I'm in the back kill the other people in the car who actually are wearing belts?

Those power hungry jerks.

Seriously? Do you have any proof of people are being killed by other people not wearing seat belts?

Regardless, think about the principle you are setting. Maybe they should mandate those toilet seat locks some parents use in all houses, in case someone with a toddler visits my house. Or maybe they should require everyone to stock defibrillators in case someone has a hard attack. Maybe it should be illegal to cancel your phone line in case you need to call 911. Maybe owning a cat should be illegal because some people are allergic to them. Do you really want the government involved in all these issues? If choosing not to wear a seat belt is no longer my right, what is? What I eat, what I wear, when I sleep, what games I play, what school I go to, what doctor I use. Of course, if I am playing a game that causes harm to others, then there is a problem. Otherwise, this is America. Let us be free.
