She wasn't really fired, just laid off. Company downsizing has been running rampant throughout every country with the global economic downturn. However, IMHO, they miscued this layoff. When you go to layoff an employee, you try to sluff your slackers, or those who will grow the least in the long-term. Other considerations are getting rid of senior employees who's salaries have grown over the years to replace with cheaper/fresher staff...
But you still need to consider if you will be losing in the long-run by ousting an employee who has the promise of staying long-term(it costs more to lose an employee and hire a new one than to just keep the old in most cases). If you have an employee which is a decent worker, likely to stick around for a long-term, and has some emotional investment in the company, those are usually those you keep....
So, baring something that is not mentioned about their work ethic, I'd have to say they made a mistake. One possible explaination is that as a couple, they were considered a "package deal" and they thought they couldn't get rid of one without losing the other. In a less business related note, you'd think there would be some loyalty after saving the guys life...but...these are the times we live in...
