Well I couldn't find any info indicating that the F260 is known for mechanical failure. It's considered an "aerobatics" airplane and is used for military training. It holds a number of speed records for aircraft in its weight class, so they are meant to go fast...seems like they're fairly well-respected and highly thought-of aircraft, though...

There was an eye witness account that the plane may have struck a flock of birds mid-air. I don't know it this has anything to do with the mechanical failure, or if the failure occurred first.
