While it is likely that President Bush wasn't aware of Muntadhar al-Zaid's feelings prior to the news conference, I'm sure he was informed during a de-briefing afterward.
Muntadhar al-Zaid was allegedly kidnapped by Al-Qaida gunmen while on assignment in a Sunni district of Baghdad but safely returned. He was also arrested by American soldiers. He has a great deal of resentment of America's presence in Iraq as well as Iran's moral presence in the Shiite community.
The question of whether the shoe-throwing incident was planned is still unanswered. His brother said that he hadn't planned to do it, but a colleague from his news channel employer said that he had been planning it for some time.
In short, he didn't know but now he does.
Hope this helps!

From the BBC:
"This is a farewell kiss, you dog," he yelled in Arabic as he threw his shoes. "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."
Do you think if the BBC knows what his motives were, that Bush doesn't? He is just playing dumb, and the American media is covering up on his behalf by under-reporting what the man actually said. At the time of the incident I went to CNN, both their article and video did not provide the complete statement, even breaking up his quote with "..." to avoid printing the reason he gave for what he did. That is not reporting the news, that is distorting reality. Even now on CNN there is not a direct quote.
As usual, the government plays dumb, and the media treats us like we are idiots, and do not know the western media is the most biased propaganda mill in the world. If you want to find any truth in news, you need to look at multiple stories from different sources, and then read between the lines. What is left unreported is often much more telling than what they actually say.
Also, the man's bones are now broken after he was brutally beat in Iraq custody by thugs acting to protect the "honor" of bigger thugs. Another story most people are unaware of.

That story is above, and a picture is below. I guess it's best people not focus too much on the many deaths of innocent women and children, or the reporter who is being tortured in prison for "throwing a shoe", and just focus on "the sense of disrespect he showed Americans be disrespecting the president". That's what really matters, right? Let's all be self-righteous and offended and bask in our ignorance while we drink our cokes and eat our cheeseburgers. "I'm lovin it!"

So, the answer is he is neither ignorant or pretending. He is incapable of seeing the shoe thrower's point of view.

If you listen to the clip, he even says that he believes the guy threw the shoe at him because "they were humiliated". So he's pretending SOMETHING one way or another...since later he changed his answer to "I don't know what his beef was."

Journalists are supposed to be responsible and objective, and while it's easy to understand how the man felt, really, who throws a shoe?
I've read many times that Bush deserves nothing but support and respect as he is still the President, but what those people don't seem to grasp is that as President, he sets the example for his country, and many people will project his image onto the rest of America.

Yeah. You get to be president of the US by being dumb and oblivious with a team of advisers.

He knows exactly what the issue was. The reporter told him why he was throwing the shoe, when he did it. I am sure he was told what was said. Afterwards, he compared the action to someone giving the finger and claimed he didn't know what the guy's issue was. I don't believe it for a second. From the BBC:
"This is a farewell kiss, you dog," he yelled in Arabic as he threw his shoes. "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq."

He was try to make humor out of a potential dangerous situation. He most certainly Knows where the "beef" is from,he wrecked that young man's country then he checks into the country announced and tries to tell them that all is okay. When clearly nothing is okay, all is broken. So as we all know that Bush is no fool he surely understands where the beef is coming from.

Some of the characteristics of someone with a psychopathic disorder (ICD-10) are a lack of remorse and guilt, and callous and lack of empathy. A person with this disorder is incapable of realizing what he has done is immoral and he will be incapable of showing any empathy for anyone who has been effected by his actions. So, the answer is he is neither ignorant or pretending. He is incapable of seeing the shoe thrower's point of view.

No, he's not ignorant. He's a criminal. He knows why people hate him. He knows that people hate him because he is doing the terror on the world and his own country so as to further the agenda of the new world order and the elite. Every Iraqi probably knows this and finds him to be despicable to stand up there talking like he's some good little christian boy that does what he truly believes is best. He only does what is best for himself/the NWO. If you listen to the clip, he even says that he believes the guy threw the shoe at him because "they were humiliated". So he's pretending SOMETHING one way or another...since later he changed his answer to "I don't know what his beef was."

He does not. He has been insulated heavily from what is happening in the world. His entire world view is crafted for him by his advisors. The problem is that a very astute president would have a terrible time keeping track of the happenings in Iraq, and whatever Bush has been, astute is not one of the words I'd use. Of course all recent presidents have had this problem to a greater or lesser degree.

Ignorant or just pretending to be ignorant... either way it's hard to believe he could be so oblivious to the world's view of him... Journalists are supposed to be responsible and objective, and while it's easy to understand how the man felt, really, who throws a shoe?

Hopefully he doesn't care what the idiot's beef is. Ironically, Bush is the reason the dude can throw his shoes in the first place. If Saddam Hussein was still around and he threw his shoes at him, the guy would be strung up by his testicles right now. The mixed up man should have been throwing gifts at Bush not shoes.

Perhaps his comment is simply a matter of ignoring the lack of civility in a foreign country. Throwing anything at a foreign leader in the US would result in instant jail time and possibly more. You may not agree with anything that President Bush has done, but every person who holds an office of power deserves the respect of that nation or its people regardless of ideological differences. If you were only supposed to treat people with respect that you truly respected, then we would be a world without hope. As it is, we are falling further down that slope every time we allow someone to disrespect the office of the President by simply calling President Bush or President Clinton, "Bush", "Dubya" "Bill" or "Clinton". Follow the example set forth by our founding fathers. Honor the persons holding our nation's highest offices in the hope that they will honor our nation, even if you feel they don't currently do so. By the way, this was covered extremely well during the third season of the West Wing (I believe) when President Bartlett discussed this very situation with his new secretary (played by Lily Tomlin).

I guess that's where the problem lies - these people do not hold a position of power - they hold a position of responsibility. How can they possibly be responsible when they view their position as one of power where there is no accountability.
In President Bush's position, respect should be earned and not demanded.
