This video disturbs me for several reasons. First of all, it is blatant propaganda. He rambles on and on about the virtues of this study technology without ever even telling his audience what study technology is or what it entails.

Second, I feel like this is an effort by Scientology (through Tom Cruise) to exploit a weak point in our society, education. As a teacher, I completely agree with several of the points he made: labels on children are damaging, medication is not the answer, we need a restructuring of our educational system. Lots of Americans would agree with these points and be reeled in with his personal story of dyslexia. However, study technology is not the answer to these issues. What Mr. Cruise fails to mention is that integrated into study technology is a lot of scientologist principles.

L. Ron Hubbard, inventor of scientology, called study technology "scientologist's primary bridge to society." I find that quote a little scary, as it kind of implies that it's going to be used as a way to slowly convert society to scientology, starting with children.

Study technology doesn't offer anything new. It's a back-to-basics type program that is shielding its true intent of religious conversion. It's 3 principles are: 1) use pictures/diagrams to illustrate concepts, 2) break down complex concepts so they can be mastered in simple steps, and 3) always seek definitions of unfamiliar terms. I do these things with my students every single day.

I feel sorry for people who have fallen into the grips of cults like scientology. I feel as if they are often drawn to such things because of a need for a family structure and belonging. However, I want them to stay away from children's minds.

Something about this speech bothers me. The speech seemed more like a cry for attention that he was dyslexic. All he really said was that Study Technology helped him, completely avoiding the subject on what Study Technology actually /is/.

He was also talking about how much he wanted every child, parent, educator etc whom have comprehension problems. However, with a bit of research, It was publicly stated by Hubbard that study tech is directly affiliated with Scientology. And frankly, I personally don't want to mix Religion and Educational practices.

I'm sorry to say, but I'm sure there are alternatives to learning with disabilities than joining a religion that doesn't have good reputation.

I Agree with what you said in A way.

However I think that it is very hard to look at A celebrity endorsing A product without first scrutinizing why they are endorsing it.

A 5 minute advertisement for study technology. I'm a minute in and I don't know what it is yet. Story telling is good marketing but what's the product? Two minutes and I still don't know what study technology is. Four minutes and he's a pilot but I still don't know what it is. Reminds me of a make money through real estate infomercial.

One very important portion of the "Study Technology" title was left out by both Jason and Tom Cruise, it's actually called "L Ron Hubbard Study Technology" and as cool as "Study Technology" sounds, it is never mentioned exactly what it is or what it does differently.

If you visit the website, You find the curriculum consists of nothing but L Ron Hubbard books. Ok... this education might work for a fellow like Tom Cruise but I am not sure this will work for most.

seems....rather...cultish?

So, Tom believes that a single approach developed by a single individual can solve all educational problems of all people from all backgrounds.

Is there any peer reviewed data for this?

Scientology is what it is. After looking at the video, it showed me nothing as to how "study tech" works.
So I looked up some sites.

I found some good opinions on Study Technology:
"Study "tech" is how the unreality of Hubbard's nonsense is implanted into his followers."
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/mystory/study.html
http://www.studytech.org/home.php

It looks like a learning package that really isn't.

Is there a correlation between when he started to employ the methods of "Study Technology" and when his career started to go downhill?

Blatant propaganda and infomercial tactics aside...

Cruise identifies that learning is hard, that some people have a predisposition to mathematics over languages, and that frustration is a key contributing factor to many learning disabilities.

Our culture has not yet perfected education. While I'm not a believer or supporter of Scientology, I recognize that no matter how small, there will be some value for some people in Study Technology.

If I was still an active teacher, I would take him up on his offer and order the program. So long the program was free, I would evaluate it, determine the strengths and integrate those (if any) into my personal curriculum.

It's easy to discount things like this because of the "religion" (if I could increase the size of my quotes I would) that is pitching them. However, learning styles are varied and often drastic. Understanding what has worked and what could work is more important than personal affiliations. Throughout history, the best teachers have understood that they need to rise above social limitations and preconceptions to become an expert in their field.

This question asks us what our thoughts are about the video. After watching the video I can say the following things: Tom Cruise definately believes strongly in this learning/teaching method called study technology. He attributes many of his accomplishments to the technique but does not specify at what point in his life he started to apply it. Additionally I could not tell you any more about study technology now than I could before watching the video.
