Who are some interesting mobsters, gangsters or criminals?
I've been on a real trip lately of reading books and finding information about historical mobs, gangs, killers, etc. I've run dry on ideas of names or events to search, however, and I'm out of books to read! Does anyone have any suggestions on who to read about, or even better, actual books/sites I should look at?

I also get a huge kick out of these two old ladies. They would take in homeless people, marry them, take out insurance policies on them, and as soon as enough time had passed so that the legitimacy of the policies would not be disputed, they'd run the poor guys over!

• Thanks for the suggestion, Harold Schechter (who I've read a number of books by that I really enjoyed) has a book about HH Holmes that I'm going to check out!

I have to believe that you've already been through Ed Gein and Manson, and the standard serial killers, so I'd recommend you look into some of the famous Mexican Female Drug Lords. There is Sandra Beltran(Queen of the Pacific):

Or Griselda Blanco. I'm not sure, but I think Cocaine Cowboys was based on her life(it's a movie, look into it). She is the most murderous felonious drug lord I can think of, based out of Miami at least.

Griselda Blanco is reportedly responsible for over 200 deaths, but most experts believe that number to be extremely low.

This guy Michael Owen Perry was one of the most twisted killers I have ever heard of. Apparently, he was convinced that Xanadu singer Olivia Newton-John was telepathically sending him messages and taunting him. He eventually killed his entire family. Not sure there are any good books or sites out there on him, but the TV show Most Evil did a good profile.

Reggie and Ronnie Kray http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/07/Krays.jpg/250px-Krays.jpg
The Kray twins, both paranoid schizophrenics and ruthless gangsters, terrorized London's east end in the 50's and early 60's.
JK Rowling, author of Harry Potter, saw firsthand the terror with which people recalled the twins while she was a child. Even though the Krays were behind bars, many people in her neighborhood would not even speak their names aloud. This was the inspiration behind calling Voldemort "He Who Must Not Be Named" or "You Know Who".
Just look at these guys. They're crazy, they're twins (one in a white suit, one in a black suit), they British and they inspired Lord Voldemort. I'd say we have a winner.
Oh, and also, the Morrissey song "Last of the Famous International Playboys" is about them.

Gangster Henry Hill has been the basis for two classic movies: Scorsese's "Goodfellas," which was based on the Nicholas Pileggi book about Hill, and "My Blue Heaven," a comedy about Hill written by Pileggi's wife, Nora Ephron. http://z.about.com/d/crime/1/0/l/c/hill_henry1.jpg
Ray Liotta's performance as Hill is one of the all-time movie gangster classic turns, and Hill is also a staple of "The Howard Stern Show." Very big personality who has largely informed our modern idea of what New York gangsters are like. (Hill is referenced by name in an episode or two of "The Sopranos"). Plus, how many gangsters have their own MySpace profile?

Also, you've got to love Johnny Stompanato, a former Marine who worked for LA kingpin Mickey Cohen and dated screen siren Lana Turner. He died in 1958 after having been stabbed at Turner's home in Beverly Hills BY HER TEENAGE DAUGHTER! Snap.
