On Dec 23, 2008, the high court of the Netherlands Antilles recommended Michael Jason Registe be extradited to the U.S., however, Registe's defense attorney Rumco Stomp filed an appeal to the High Council, stating the high court's "advice was based on an antiquated and questionable theory." St. Maarten's governor will make the final decision about whether to extradite Registe but is delaying his decision until the High Council (High Council is like the Supreme Court in the U.S.) makes it's ruling. The High Council is expected to make it's ruling within two months.
Registe remains in the Pointe Blanche House of Detention, where he has been held since his August 27 arrest at a local guesthouse.
