Cricket was popular in the USA until around the Civil War period. During the 1860's baseball became more organised and gradually became completely dominant. I don't think anyone can say why baseball was able to push out cricket in the USA but not other countries. It has taken hold in Japan and Cuba, undoubtedly due to the American occupation of those countries for some years.

Part of the divide as well, comes from the fact that each of these sports (cricket and baseball) is closely linked to the national identity of its home country. Just look at the number of baseball terms we use in daily life: 'he struck out with that speech,' 'that question came out of left field,' even the legal notion of having 'strikes' against you. All this serves to foster an 'either or' mentality, which makes the introduction of cricket (and thus the contrasting culture) a harder sell than other unfamiliar games, which might come with fewer cultural markers.
Which isn't to say baseball is necessarily the US's largest obsession. Football (not soccer) and basketball are also very popular, and are the focus of sports broadcasting.

Where cricket is popular in the UK and India, in the USA the 'national pass time' (is) baseball. It's an odd situation really, because very few people on this side of the pond have any idea what cricket is about. It seems like a complicated game, making it impenetrable. Baseball was not always the national pass time in ths USA. It was in the second half of the 19th century that it became dominant.

Very good point, Albanian. I was answering from a contemporary perspective, and was imprecise with phraseology.

Most Americans see cricket as a complicated game. Many countries have cricket there. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, India,Pakistan and the Carribbean Countries. Americans love baseball,American football and basketball. Unfortunately Americans where not weaned on cricket like West Indians, Australians, East Indians etc(THESE COUNTRIES AND ISLANDS WHERE RULE BY THE BRITISH). I live in Barbados which is one of the Caribbean countries and cricket is our number one sporting activity. I would say due to the American sporting culture cricket is not one of the desired or recognize sports. My country was colonized by the British and we adopted their way of life. Education, religion, politics etc. hence cricket would be one of the sporting activities we would call our own also.Cricket is the number one sport in the West Indies(Caribbean) . Americans on the other hand where weaned on baseball. Some say the sports are similar but Americans love baseball and consider it an "American pass-time". If baseball is considered as an "American past-time" cricket would then be let say an "English past-time". The main reason for the English being crazy over cricket would be due to their sporting culture and tradition. Cricket was "first documented as being played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, cricket had developed to the point where it had become the national sport of England" {www.wikipedia.org}. As the English have grow to love cricket to the Americans baseball

The sport most closely related to cricket is baseball and that is huge in the USA, along with football and basketball. I would suppose the game could catch on here, just a matter of everyone getting more familiarized with it. Just like soccer wasn't big years ago and it's become quite more popular now with both indoor and outdoor professional leagues in the USA.
