Once there was a king, the title was usually inherited. Sometimes this was not the case when a son was not available. Then the uncles and cousins often fought over the right to become king. The "War of the Roses," in English history was a result of this.

Sometimes you could become a king if a strong ally saw a way to check their adversaries by making you king. Zheng He, the great Chinese admiral, recognized the sultan of Malacca as a king, thereby checking the ambitions of the King of Siam.

In almost all kingdoms, the King inherited his kingdom from his father. In a few rare cases the king was elected by the higher nobles. Battles only occurred when there was a dispute over the succession. Wealth only played a part indirectly, in that if it came to battle, a prince with more wealth had an advantage. Most of the time the throne was passed peacefully from father to son.
