I recommend checking out Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They have a great selection of kitchenware and baking tools.

Check out your local restaurant supply store.

If you live in any size town at all you should have a restaurant supply store. Look it up in your phone book. If you don't have one check the next largest town in your area. This will get you both a good deal and quality product. These products tend to not be pretty. They are functional. Restaurants don't care how they look they want something that works well and last a while.

If your backing things like cookies I recommend your nears Sam's Club or Cosco. By rolled aluminum half sheet pans. They last for ever. I also recommend a couple splat mats as you can reuse them over and over and over again for backing cookies and you don't have to worry about your cookies ever sticking.

If your setting up an entire kitchen I highly recommend Alton Browns book "Gear for your kitchen"

I agree with pazaq, buy any equipment and tools at a restaurant supply store. The quality is superior to anything other than the very top of the line household gear that you can find, and usually at a fraction of the price. Online stores seem to be pretty pricey but the stuff is usually pretty good. In Western Canada I would suggest Condon Barr, Geanel, or Russell Food Equipment. Online I have looked at the stuff at:

culinarydirect.com
chefdepot.net
creativecookware.com

among others.

Try freecycle (www.freecycle.org) or craigslist for freebees. Otherwise the resto supply suggestion is best.
