Arrowroot is a thickener. It's similar in nature to corn starch but more frequently used in gourmet cooking that requires thickening. It's typically mixed in powder form with a small amount of water to form a slurry before adding it to a recipe.
The spice brand McCormick has it in its small glass spice jars and it is available in most grocery stores. This is the most easily available brand I have found.
