My favorite budget wine is Barefoot Cellars from Lodi, California. They have four lovely reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Shiraz, and Merlot. For cooking, I love the Zinfandel. And, get this - they're all under $5 a bottle! Most liquor stores and many grocery stores carry it.
Here's what Barefoot says about the Zin: "Full-bodied with rich notes of ruby red fruit such as ripe cherries and wild raspberries our Lodi Zinfandel will never be called a wallflower. It stands out in a crowd. Well-balanced and smooth, it delivers a deep, fruit-filled aroma and a subtly spicy and long-lasting finish."
Enjoy and Mahalo!

What red wine would you suggest for cooking that's less than $10 a bottle?
I don't know much about wine, but I like to use it when I'm cooking, mainly for sauces. I don't want to spend a lot, $10 max, and something easily accessibly that I could pick up at the grocery store (or Costco) would be great.

• I liked the description of the taste the wine has, and it's somewhat local to me so that's a plus. Thanks

I have been reading this wine blog all about cheap wines and I recently tried one out that I think they might be able to ship to you. You can read the review of the wine at this page. It only cost me 5 dollars and it tasted great, so I think it would work well for your cooking purposes. http://www.cheapwinereviews.com/leelanau-cellars-autumn-harvest

I drink wine, but have only cooked with it a few times, and don't remember what I used(probably something different every time). My favorite cheap red wine is Carlo Rossi Merlot or Sangria. At Cub Foods liquor store in Minnesota, it's about $8.99 for a 1.5 liter jug. The cheapest wine I've drank besides for MD20/20, is Livingston Chianti, for like, $5.99, then Gallo Family Merlot is around the same price(all 1.5 liters). I see no reason why those wouldn't be adequate for cooking. If your taste is like mine, I prefer wine that is an equal combination of sweet and bitter, which is what I also think of, as ideal for cooking as well. So, ultimately, that would be Carlo Rossi (Sangria or Merlot). (Look for the jugs; Carlo Rossi is bottled in distinctive looking jugs)

Cooking with wine can be expensive so I use Charles Shaw also known as Two Buck Chuck. It's nickname comes from the fact that it only costs about $2 per bottle. Not only is it extremely affordable but I find that it works just as well with my recipes as the more expensive wines. You can find it at Trader Joe's.
