Strawberries are great to dip in chocolate fondue

For the fondue:
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup liquid nondairy creamer

For dipping, choose any or all of the following:
Fresh fruit
Dried fruit
Marshmallows
Brownies
Soft, chewy cookies

Sift cocoa through a fine mesh sieve.  In a saucepan, over medium heat, combine cocoa, sugar, margarine and nondairy creamer, stirring continuously for 4 minutes or until heated through.  Pour cocoa mixture into a fondue pot or bowl for dipping.  Surround with selected dipping treats and serve with toothpicks

Foods to dip into the fondue:  strawberries, bananas, pineapple, slices of poundcake or angel food cake, vanilla wafers, and pretzel sticks

Chocolate Fondue Recipe
  • 14 ounces good quality bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup milk or whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons liqueur (optional), or 1 teaspoon vanilla, peppermint, or almond extract (optional)

In a small saucepan, heat cream over medium-low heat until it just begins to boil. Remove from heat and add chocolate. Cover and let stand for five minutes; using a whisk, beat the cream and chocolate mixture together until smooth. Stir in liqueur or other flavorings.

Transfer chocolate mixture to a fondue pot and light the flame to keep fondue warm. Serve with your choice of dippers. After serving, stir occasionally and add a bit more cream or milk if the fondue becomes too thick.

You can also try white chocolate as well - or have one chocolate fountains, and one white chocolate fountain

Various fruits, clearly. Bananas and chocolate are a classic combination. But the two favorites at our fondue party last year were chunks of pound cake and handmade marshmallows. The former is easy to come by, you can by the latter at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and sometimes Williams-Sonoma. The recipe we used:

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup milk

1/2 cup milk chocolate

1/4 cup caramel syrup

For the Dipping Basket:

Fruit, cut (strawberries, bananas and pineapple)

Marshmallows

Cake, cubed (pound cake and cheesecake)

PREPARATION:

Soften milk chocolate in the microwave. Heat milk in the fondue  pot. Once it's hot, add softened chocolate .

Stir until you have a smooth consistency. Pour caramel into a pool in the
middle of the chocolate.

Things that don't fall apart, leaving parts behind for unwary dippers!

Other than the fruits, I think my favorite things are biscotti. Almond or hazelnut biscotti dipped in chocolate fondue is amazing, particularly if the biscotti are fresh. If you can find any kind of biscotti with dried fruit, that's wonderful, too.

Lace cookies are great, or those Waffeln (butter cookies with caramel in between). Both are sold seasonally at Trader Joe's. I think I also saw chocolate fondue in there a few weeks ago!

I'd say scones, but scones are too crumbly.

G'day Cfinke,

Thank you for your question.

101 recipes lists these foods as great dips for fondues.

http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/001246.html

Fruits: sliced bananas (grilled + caramelized, even better), apples, pears, peaches, pineapples, dried fruit, citrus sections, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blackberries.

Cakes and other sweet things: angel food cake, graham crackers, marshmallows, tiny brownies, tiny cookies, lady fingers, shortbread, amaretti, biscotti, crystallized ginger chunks, or meringues.

It also suggests this recipe

Valentine's Chocolate Fondue Recipe
1 pound of premium semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, well chopped
1 1/2 cups of organic heavy cream

Set aside the chopped chocolate. Pour the cream into a medium, thick-bottomed saucepan (or double boiler if you have one) over low heat. Bring the cream to a simmer and add the chocolate. Stir until the chocolate is melted.

Transfer the chocolate to a fondue pot and enjoy.

For something a bit different and for more adult taste, try pickled hop shoots dipped in your chocolate fondue. There is a strong but underrated affinity between beer and chocolate that is known mainly to serious beer fans. The hop shoots will add a contrasting sourness and bitterness to the sweet chocolate. And, of course, wash them down with a good stout or porter.
