Vendor specific certifications can be very useful for entry to mid-level jobs. They can be costly to maintain. Many of these certifications can be had through focused training and test taking and may not have direct relation to ability or experience in performing the job.
For high end jobs, Project Management and Security certifications can affect salary and definitely set you apart in related jobs. Both of these types of certifications require actual work experience to sit for the exams.

Certifications can help, but it depends on the hiring company, the job, the market and your experience. You can check detailed job descriptions on http://www.dice.com/ for the types of jobs you are considering. Review several and look for their certificate requirements. Vendor specific certifications can be very useful for entry to mid-level jobs. They can be costly to maintain.
