Would it shorten the life of lithium ion batteries if it's plugged in even if it still has some juice in it?

When I had my first cellphone in the early 90s, I was told that it would be bad for its batteries to be plugged in for charging if it doesn't say or beep 'low batt' yet. They would always recommend to wait until the device discharges before plugging it in because it would shorten its life. Same goes with unplugging it without waiting for it to be fully charged.

I know that todays technology in batteries is different back then. But I still want to read something that would give me peace of mind.

I still sometimes wait for my devices (laptop, phone, cameras) to be fully charged before unplugging them and I don't recharge them until the 'low batt' icon appears. When I do otherwise because I need to leave the house, I feel kind of bad thinking that I'm shortening the battery's life cycle.

I don't believe Lithium Ion batteries suffer from a "memory effect" from charging it "too early."

All newer lithium based batteries have much smarter circuitry than the batteries we used to have.

This website will teach you more about battery technology and best practices than any other I have seen.
