I think it's his desire to create great invention.
From Malcom Baird personal journal:
John Logie Baird got his inventive inspiration from reading the newly published stories of H.G. Wells. Wells made it seem that anything was possible: travel to the moon, invisibility... so why not television?
Please note that there were inventors before John Baird attempted to "make" television. However, Baird was the pioneer in major advances in the process of "making" television
From Wikipedia:
Although the development of television was the result of work by many inventors, Baird was its foremost pioneer and made major advances in the field. He is credited with being the first person to produce a live, moving, duotone (or "greyscale") television image from reflected light. Baird achieved this, where other inventors had failed, by obtaining a better photoelectric cell and improving the signal conditioning from the photocell and the video amplifier.

Important facts:
TV enabled people to communicate over long distances, and see each other from afar.
TV took actors to the next level of their careers, and it enabled them to perform their dream of being famous on TV. Also, the TV can be used for educational program, like National Geographic, the Discovery Kids channel, PBS.
TV advanced society as a whole.
According to the Wikipedia:
"Scottish inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated the transmission of moving silhouette images in London in 1925, and of moving, monochromatic images in 1926. Baird's scanning disk produced an image of 30 lines resolution, barely enough to discern a human face, from a double spiral of lenses."
John Logie Baird was the inventor of the first television, yet it's important to think of it like this: Many creators and collaborators came together to invent such a great invention as the television.

Television came after radio, and it was considered to be the next step. Everyone was able to listen to some good programming, so they thought, if we can listen, why not be able to see what's going on. Before television, people used to sit around and listen to radio sitcoms like we watch TV shows.

Television was first invented as a two-way communication device, to replace the telephone... but, the powers that be restricted it to a one way communication device... specifically because of the lack in technology at the time it was invented, it was too big and at the time for the price, nobody could actually afford to purchase it on a mass volume scale...
