Why is there a Mac version and a Windows version of the same Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner? S510 vs S510M

Really. Besides the paint job and the software that comes with it, what the hell's the difference? I compared these things and spec for spec, they're the same, with the only difference being the software that's included.

So, can I buy a S510 and run it on my Mac if I had the software that came with the S510M? Anyone have experience doing this very thing?

Unfortunately it is not as easy as just using the Mac software with the Windows ScanSnap 510 and vice-versa. For whatever reason, Fujisu doesn't allow that.

There have been people who have used a crazy Japanese version of the driver to do this, but I haven't personally tried it.

I have been told that Fujitsu is finally getting smart and the S1500/1500M, which will be out this year, will in fact work cross platform and it is just the shipped software that is different, but that doesn't help you right now.

• You actually told me about a new product, and I've learned that I don't need the new one and can just stick with the old one, provided I get the Mac version. Thanks!

Any compelling reasons to wait for the S1500 in your opinion? The current generation of ScanSnap seems great, but I can't find much info on the upcoming S1500 other than its mentions at CES. It would seem not much has changed except for a redesigned software interface.

OK, I did a little digging and found this:

* It will be called the ScanSnap S1500M
* Intelligent resolution function
* Paper double-feed detection
* Redesigned software interface for Leopard
* Enhanced business card scanning
* 20ppm
* Bundled with Acrobat 8
