This question cannot be answered without the detail necessary to provide the answer. The amount of RAM in a system depends on the type of motherboard, the type of processor, and the number of slots available for ram. Some motherboards use a chipset which limits the amount of RAM to 2gb and some use a chipset which allows a maximum of 32gb. It would all depend on the underlying hardware.
You can take a look here for the various chipsets, memory upgrades, and detail on how much they can handle: http://www.upgradecomputermemory.com/ram.cfm/memory/I/Intel-Chipset-Memory/

If you have another operating system, then this rule of thumb still applies. Unless it's a 64-bit system (or one of which I'm unaware), it can't support more than 4 GB of Ram. It's actually less than this due to rounding of the GB definition.
64 Bit Systems can handle more, but each is a little different, but generally you can reach your maximum better if you get a 64 Bit OS.

What is the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed on a computer?
I'm in a computer repair class at my school but, unfortunately we haven't received our text books and our teacher doesn't really tell us much on the assignments before he assigns them, if does he probably does it when I'm not there. overall he is an awesome teacher tough. lol so if i could get a answer to this it would be much appreciated.
P.S. bing and google only tell me the minimum amount of RAM.

you wouldn't happen to know what motherboard dell uses in their Optiplex 755? or a common motherboard dell uses? because i dont think i can open up my tower without my teachers permission, and he won't be at school until next week.

The important thing to remember is that 32 Bit Software can NOT handle more than 4 GB of RAM. If you have another operating system, then this rule of thumb still applies. Easiest way to find out the max ram is to go to www.crucial.com and use the advisor tool. a quick search shows that the Optiplex 755 max memory is 2gb. And they don't really have a listing for their motherboard but they mostly seem to be running ICH9DO chipset motherboards.
