You generally have to be really hardcore about your sound for it to matter. That numbering system is:
X.Y
Where X is the number of speakers and Y is the number of subwoofers. So a 5.1 system has 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer, while 7.1 is 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer.
The average person wouldn't even know where to PUT seven speakers, so you're probably just fine with a 5.1 system. Then again, this is coming from someone who's never really wanted more than two.

5.1 - Center speaker, two front speakers, two rear speakers. 7.1 adds two mid speakers located to your left and right.
It is worth the price? Depends on the price. I can only see it being incrementally better... but I'm not an audiophile...

What is the difference between a 7.1 home theater system and a 5.1 system? Is it worth the price difference?
I need to buy a new home theater sound system and the 7.1 seems to be generally more expensive.

The first number is how many speakers you have around you. The decimal number (.1) indicates a sub-woofer. 5.1 - Center speaker, two front speakers, two rear speakers. 7.1 adds two mid speakers located to your left and right.
It is worth the price? Depends on the price. I can only see it being incrementally better... but I'm not an audiophile...
