Think about it like printing photo's at a photolab. If you take in a four by six and blow it up to an eight by ten, no matter how good the original, the enlargement will be of lower quality. However, if you take in the film from the camera which to the picture which was printed as a four by six and have it developed as an eight by ten, you will easily be able to tell the different in quality between the enlargement and the newly printed eight by ten.
Hope that helps!

Well... depends what you mean by better. For me, Blu-Ray has more data, so it is "better". DVD is cheaper, so it is "better".

Wow I had thought of like 3 or 4 different ways to answer this question. Price wasn't one of them good job.

Blu-Ray discs will always produce a higher quality picture if you have a monitor capable of displaying it. That said some upconverting dvd's do a better job of playing plain old dvd's than blu-ray players do of playing those same dvd's. Good Luck!

The idea is that the more data that is in each video, the better the image and the better the sound (many people forget about the sound). A single-layer blu ray disc can hold 25GB.
A dual-layer blu ray disc can hold 50GB.
A regular DVD hold 4.7GB

Blu-Ray will always be higher quality than an up-converted DVD, no matter what oil and snakewater manufacturers of up converting DVD players tell you. It is physically impossible for an up converted picture to match native high definition footage.
