If you have a PC, you can utilize yours extra space on PS3 to become a Streaming Media Server. All you need is a free software called TVersity.
Just download and install TVersity on your PC, the software will trascode any media format (e.g. DivX & YouTube video) which originally not supported by your console, then it stream it to your PS3 and play on your big screen.
About the bad cooling system, is a handicap since PS3 is born, so just buy an aftermarket cooler and install it, it keep your PS3 healthy. Pelican Air FLow Cooler might be a good choice.

Then since it is spare, you can polish your carpenter skills, and build a wood case in the shape of many random objects, your objective is to customize the old ps3 to the effect that it will be so cool you'll actually want to keep it lol! But the ultimate objective is to cash in on the popular casing and your imagination and sell it on ebay. Ideas: Star wars spaceships, cars, cartoon characters. The sky is the limit and can possibly generate some good income!

What fun things could I do with my extra 40GB PS3 with a bad cooling system?
I have replaced this one with a newer 80GB model that works just fine but this older one does not play games or movies because of a cooling issue. What could I do with or to the PS3 to have some fun or get creative?

I'm not sure if this is your kind of 'fun', but you can install ubuntu on it, which is a free Linux system. As ubuntu will only use one cell engine out of eight ( I think), it uses less processor power, and will therefore probably work fine with your playstation without proper cooling. If it's only the cooling system, and you are electronically inclined fix it! Use some innovation and create a cooling system or get a replacement part. It can be water cooled like the system mod below: http://www.gearfuse.com/water-cooled-ps3-someone-was-bound-to-do-it/
