Interestingly enough, Microsoft is giving a free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, and, as I understand it, they've fixed a ton of the problems that most people have with Vista. I've heard people say that Windows 7 is the OS that Vista wishes it was.
Though XP is more solid and more easily compatible with most PC software, Microsoft is only offering customer support on it until 2012. I know that I've kept computers for longer than 3 years. So, upgrading isn't a bad idea.
After using it for a while, I actually kinda like Vista. I've not used it for anything other than personal use, though.

It does have some advantages over XP - much better security, a search feature that doesn't take an hour to run, etc., but my recommendation for ANY machine running Vista is to run the free Windows 7 release candidate instead, it is what Vista should have been when it was first released and is a marked improvement.

Lousy for either purpose. Large, slow, and bloated. Older machines and netbooks simply can't run Vista (including many that Microsoft claimed were "Vista-capable). I know, I installed it on four such machines and had to revert to XP on two of them.
