You can go get the Office compatability pack. It works on valid Office XP and 2003 versions and let's you open and view .docx files. you won't be able to edit them and save them as the new format though

What can I do when a client is sending me a docx. format file and I can't open it with Microsoft Word or any other program?

the .docx format is the new MS Word format. You must have Office 2007 to read this format. (Bummer, eh?) The person who created the file can always save in the .doc (old) format.
