What are your thoughts on the Livescribe Pulse Pen and do you use one?

I'm interested in what people think about this pen, and if this is something they use or would use. Why or why not?

Hi guys,

I’ve been using the pen for a while now - i love it! I’m a college student with a bioengineering major and use the pen for all my engineering classes. Studying really is a breeze with it. I just re-listen to the parts I was hazy on/my notes weren't as clear. I also share my notes with a lot of friends using their "Livescribe Online" feature so they can take advantage of my notes along with the synced audio.

Let me know if you guys have any questions!

Also, I used the discount code PULSE5A10 when I bought the pen at http://www.livescribe.com

Yes, I believe it's a great for students. Anyone who is a student or in a field that entails a lot of writing and recording would benefit from such.

I had never heard of this, so I decided to look at it. Within 2 minutes of looking at their site I decided it was not for me.

"Each single subject notebook has 100 college-ruled perforated sheets. Perfect
to take to classes and meetings. The Pulse™ smartpen only works with Livescribe™ dot paper. Use
it to activate all smartpen applications."

You get four 100 page notebooks for $19.99, not a ridiculous price, but being proprietary like that would not work for me. I can carry a pen around with me, but I don't carry a notebook...

Hi John,

I have been the using the pen for a while now and highly recommend it. As far as paying for the paper -- you can print your own pages now using Livescribe's software for free. So, you can merely carry loose-leaf pages and not be bogged down by a notebook. They also have nice, smaller journals for sale for reasonable prices.

Hope that helps,
Kal

A friend showed me this last year when it was the geeky hit demo of JavaOne. While undoubtedly cool, I had a hard time finding the useful application for it in the real world. Yes, if you are basically transcribing a lecture, where *someone is talking* and *you are taking notes relevant to what is being said*, then the idea of remembering the audio context of what you wrote is a good thing. Absolutely.

Now. How many times a day do you do that? If you're a college student, sure. If you're in the sort of business where you take lots of notes, absolutely. But as a general purpose note taking device? Not so much.

The fact that it requires special is just par for the course, all of these devices do that.

I was far more intrigued with the "Fusion Pentop Computer" which is actually more like a toy /homework assistant marketed for kids. Much cheaper, but has many of the same ideas.

Flyworld also seems interesting, yet it's a totally different pen.
