A hashtag is a way of tagging your message with a category.
For example, those of us who are up tweeting in the middle of the night might put the hashtag #afterhours
For example:
"argh. insomnia FTL. feel like sleeping now though. #afterhours"
The purpose of doing this is so you can do a Summize search (http://www.summize.com) for the hashtag and find all tweets about a particular topic.
