It seems unlikely. The Kindle support page doesn't mention anything about this.
The major new software feature- text to speech probably won't show up on the Kindle 1 for two reasons - the hardware just isn't good enough to support it, and they need something to differentiate the Kindle 1 and 2.
Since the web browser is no longer experimental on the 2, it seems likely that it will be moved to the main menu on the 1 as well.
Other than that most of the new features are hardware based.

Probably not. It would be counterproductive to do so. Amazon has an interest in people upgrading. There was a recent Kindle 1 update but it seems to have only been a standard one that improves performance.
