As an HD-DVD player owner, I never felt like they had a chance to get a good library of titles released before they folded. There are really very few ESSENTIAL HD-DVD's. "Goodfellas," "Batman Begins" and "Assassination of Jesse James" all look very pretty, but I'm not sure it's worth buying just for those 3 and a few, random others.

There is absolutely no reason to buy an HD-DVD player or disks--unless you only want to watch the same 100 movies all the time.

This is a horrible idea and you might as well be asking "should I buy a VHS machine" or a "should I buy a betamax?" because those machines are going to be just as useful.

Speaking of which, what happened to all the VHS players and tapes in the world? do we have them all stored in some warehouse, or are we sending them to the third world?

I would actually disagree that buying a VHS player is a waste of money. Just about every classic movie and most modern ones are on VHS, and most can be found at a thrift store for $1. If you don't really care about HD that much but just want to own copies of stuff like Pulp Fiction and Indiana Jones, no apartment should be w/o a VHS player.

I've heard of people buying them because they have good video scalars to upconvert regular DVDs.

Hackers have been known to pull out the laser diodes because buying a blue laser is a $300+ endeavor.
