I have an Intel Quad core PC with a 500Gig HD running Vista. Can the HD be erased and Mac OS X be installed? Or maybe replace the HD.
3M RAM, nVidia GeForce 8600GS. Put simply, can I convert my computer to a Mac?

@ssharon is right. The very short answer is yes, it can be done. Extrapolating from your question about converting by "replacing the hard drive" I'm gonna guess that this may be above your level though.
I don't mean to insult, and if you take the time to read all about it, anyone can learn how to do it but I don't want you to think that it is easy.
ssharon was correct in refering to "hackintosh" because you are litterally having to hack it into working. The company that he mentioned Psystar does this commercially. The thing is, they have a limited hardware set that they have a practiced routine for making those exact machines work, trying to hack one together with you exact hardware will be tough. Do-able but tough.

The short answer to your question is that yes it is possible to install OS X onto generic hardware. The problem with this is that is violates the terms of service that you must agree to in order to use OS X.
For more information about how to complete the installation I would include the word "hackintosh" in your search queries.
For more information on whether installing OS X on generic hardware will continue to be prohibited I suggest following the current case of Psystar v. Apple.
