If you are just trying to burn files to a DVD then it's fairly simple. Just put your blank disk in the drive and if a box pops up asking you what to do select "Finder". From there you'll see the blank disk on the desktop and in the sidebar of Finder windows. Drag anything you want to burn onto it and when you're done right click on the disks icon and select "burn".

Although, it's a different story if you are talking about burning an actual movie that can play in a TV sets DVD player. If you're making a home movie then you'll have to use iDVD. If you want to copy a movie then DVD2onex works well. http://www.dvd2one.com/
