As an owner of one, I can safely say that the process is fairly simple and painless. I use a simple office clip, such as this one. Alternatively, you may use a small pin, a tack, or anything that is small enough to go through the hole, and is at least 1-2cm in length.

I unfold it and stick it into the tiny hole next to the SIM card slot. A little fiddling is needed to push the right spot inside the hole with some force to push the pin down, but it works great every time.

By the way, the same method works on all version of the phone in exactly the same way, as Apple kept the same mechanism on all versions of the phone.
