It is very possible to build a gaming computer yourself if you have the know how. However I find that although I have the ability to build one myself its generally cheaper and easier to buy one pre-built. I think if you are looking at HP or Dell you are looking in the wrong spot for gaming PC's. I would recommend you try to find one that fits the specs you want from here:

Most of the time its easier and cheaper to buy one of these and add to it than to build one on your own. At least if you haven't done it a few times already. Each one of those sites are also good places to pick out your parts at a reasonable price if you decide to go the self built route.
