Does anyone have any experience with Intel's Core i7? Is it worth the extra money?

My close friend just built a new computer with this processor and he loves it. We have both been doing our research and everything points to reasons to go with this processor. Assuming you want the best bang for your buck the i7 is the way to go. After all it is outperforming processors that cost more than 3x its price from last year. The processor is $279.99 from Newegg right now, but I have seen it as cheap as $229.99 from Micro Center, although not coming up on their site at the moment, but keep and eye out. Links provided.
