Can someone recommend a way to pull data from a pc to a mac using an external hard drive? is this possible? online storage?

Yes, this is possible, if the external drive was formatted for use with windows you should be able to plug it into your Mac and transfer the files off of it. Although, if you also want to put files onto the hard drive from your mac you can only do this if the drive is FAT32 or FAT formatted. OSX cannot write to a NTFS formatted drive unless you install NTFS3G.
