It depends on the amount of sweat. The official Apple website does say that submersion in a liquid is likely to cause damage (and it's not covered by their warranty), but I don't think a little sweat touching the device's surface would cause any problems. I once left my iPod Touch in a humid, steamy bathroom for twenty minutes and it was fine afterward. Unless large amounts of sweat got inside the device somehow, I think everything would be fine and it would not be damaged.
