Can dvd/vcr's with digital tuners record one channel while watching another without an extra converter box?

I like to record to vcr tapes still because of the max recording time on tapes (8 hours) and the portability of tapes - meaning being able to watch the recorded tape from any tv with a vcr.

If not, put a splitter on the cable signal and simply switch to the TV tuner while the VCR records from its tuner. All the ones I have had experience with provided that as an operating mode.
