Can anyone recommend a small stereo receiver (possibly plus speakers) to fit a small, sparse living room?

We like to keep our living room very simple and the smaller, more compact the AV gear the better. We play most of our music through a computer hooked up to our TV (computer is hidden in another room, long cables run to it) but the TV speakers aren't great. Looking for a reasonably priced alternative to a traditional receiver with large speakers or a shelf stereo.

Since you mention in your question "possibly plus speakers", let's start with a system that has the speakers built-in, AND sounds great.

The form factor and sound quality of this are very good. I think the only thing holding me back would be the price. However you can't win on all fronts. Unless somebody has a less expensive alternative along this lines, I think this is the answer.
