TZ Planet has an outstanding article on this exact problem:

In short, you need a long fast lens, a steady tripod and a remote shutter release (cable or IR).
The article suggests that you flip your camera over to manual mode and use these settings:
Aperture at f/11
ISO 100 (you don’t want any noise on your photo and it’s so bright there is really no need to go above 100)
1/125 - 1/250
You'll want to play with the aperture a bit. Also, ensure that you're shooting in RAW so that you have full control over the photo in post. It's amazing how much information a good DSLR saves that we can't see.

Anyone have tips on photographing the moon? Usually it comes out overexposed and too small.
