As for the first question, I definitely don't seem myself using Microsoft Songsmith. Leaving aside for the moment the fact that I make my own original music and so wouldn't need software like this, even if I did I wouldn't use this - all of the examples and sound clips that I've heard so far from the software seem incredibly cheesy and pre-processed. Any crappy $100 keyboard has beats and backing tracks built in that sound just as good.
And the second question, yes, I do think that the cheesy ad will hurt sales. People are often interested in at least testing out a new product that sounds cool (even if they haven't heard anything from it). Now that they have, my guess is that the only people buying this type of software will be teen girls.
One good thing came out of it, though:

Chance of me recording horrible "songs": 100%
Chance of you hearing them: 0%
Chance of me ever acknowledging using this software other than this post: 0%
Chance of me ever purchasing said software: 0%
Result of Youtube video of me singing in to this stupid program: suicide
I am interested in it because it is so horrible. It is, bar none, the worst idea I have seen out of Microsoft since Bob.
