Before you buy the sound card, consider using USB hardware instead. An item such as this one is inexpensive, reported to have excellent sound, and if it does not work - you can always buy the sound card later.

Very interesting choice. Most people, including me, use products from computer sound companies like Creative and Turtle Beach. They make very good USB external devices. However, you have suggested a product from a live/concert music equiptment company (they make mikes, amps, mixers, speakers, etc). I may buy one myself to check it out, I have a Behringer amplified mixer and pa speakers.

im building the htpc from the ground up and dont really want to have anything like that having to lay around behind the computer on top of th tv. cost isnt the problem its just the question of would a higher end sound card do better digital audio then the mother board can or is it all just digital audio and the best it can be anyways.

also its only a 2ch audio not 5.1 like the onkyo is
