sound card for s/pdif / digital out or is it not needed?
building a htpc and im wondering if spending cash on a higher end sound card or just use the onboard digital out for sound

Before you buy the sound card, consider using USB hardware instead. An item such as this one is inexpensive, reported to have excellent sound, and if it does not work - you can always buy the sound card later.
