Well, maybe. There is a part of windows called 'Event Viewer' and though it is mainly used for recording errors, you may be able to see there. You can get to it by right clicking on My Computer --> Manage and then click on a category called Event Viewer. The only problem is that it only keeps records of the last two months, but you may be able to find it in there.
For future use though, if you click on the Action tab in Manage, and then go to Properties, you can make it so that it will not delete these logs when it runs out of a predetermined amount of space.

If you don't want hardware stolen with a simple screwdriver, you should lock the cases and use a rare screw type.
Typically the heatsink can be removed with mere fingers since Intel and AMD use tool less brackets.
Are you sure the CPU was swapped? That's pretty rare...

Is there any way when a hardware component was changed in a computer runing windows xp proffesional?
Some processors where changed (for slower ones) in my company's computers. This of course is a serious matter. We keep track of the people who stays late in the office (this had to be changed when there's nobody in the office). If I can know the date they were changed I can find the person and fire him/her or prosecute. Can you please help me?

If the CPU really was swapped... that means the computer was off for some time... at least it gives you a window in the Event Viewer logs. If you don't want hardware stolen with a simple screwdriver, you should lock the cases and use a rare screw type.
