There is other manufacture of this type of scanner as lexmark, Brother (example:Brother MFC-5440CN), etc but i would recomend HP. why? cause of the support and warranty that they have on their products.

"Scan an original to a memory device
You can send the scanned image as a JPEG, PDF, or TIFF image to the memory card that is currently inserted. You also have other scanning options including quality and paper size settings.
To scan to a memory device
1. Insert the memory device.
2. Load your original print-side down in the right-front corner of the glass or in the ADF.
3. Press START SCAN.
• The Scan appears, listing various options or destinations. The default destination is whichever one you selected the last time you used this menu.
• If your device is directly connected to your computer, the Scan menu appears.
4. Press the arrow keys to highlight Memory Device, and then press OK.
5. Make any scan option changes, then press START SCAN.
The device scans the image and saves the file to the memory card."
There could be other models/brands, I will let you know if I find another.

Good standalone scanner?
Is there a good-quality, reasonably fast flatbed scanner that will do stand-along (without being connected to a PC) one-touch scanning and save files to a removable card such as an SD card?

You can try with HP - Scanjet N6310 and look at the review located in http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h1829.htm if you like it then thats what you were looking for. There is other manufacture of this type of scanner as lexmark, Brother (example:Brother MFC-5440CN), etc but i would recomend HP. why? cause of the support and warranty that they have on their products.

I believe the asker is looking for a scanner within built-in removable storage options, with PC as optional.

Ok, I became curious to know if there is really such an option after searching online without any luck. Then I got into online chat with the HP sales rep who told me there is no standalone product but an all-in-one (HP Officejet 6500) has this feature to scan and save onto a removable media. Here is the scan procedure from the user guide. "Scan an original to a memory device
